UCU master’s program History and Cultural Heritage

Master’s program in History slogan

  • Here we learn to ask unusual questions to the past.

This is the only master’s program in Ukraine that prepares specialists with competencies of both an international-level academic researcher and an expert able to work with issues of the past, collective memory and heritage in contemporary public space.

WHY THE HISTORY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM?

– mastering innovative methods and high standards of academic research;

– practical skills to implement projects related to history, memory and heritage outside the academic field;

– internships at leading institutions of public history and museums;

– about a quarter of the subjects are taught in English;

– mastering digital methods of research and humanitarian knowledge demonstration.

RESEARCH TOPIC

After attending the master’s program, a student chooses a topic of his / her scientific interest from the following proposals based on the methodology of interdisciplinary research.

Public history and cultural heritage

Studying modern society from the perspective of the past; projects related to history, memory and heritage of contemporary public space, and promotion of history in educational and cultural initiatives, museum institutions, tourism and media.

History of Ukraine of the 16th-21st centuries and the Religious Culture of the Early Modern Age

Early modern and contemporary history of Ukraine: intellectual and cultural history of the “long XIX century”, religious culture, history of the era of totalitarianism, history of modern Ukrainian-Jewish relations.

Medieval Studies

History of antiquity, Western Middle Ages, Byzantium and Ukraine-Russia of the Lithuanian-Polish era; special attention is paid to sources study, the application of linguistic competences in Latin, Greek and Church Slavonic for reading and interpretation of medieval and early modern texts.

History of Europe and America of Early Modern and Modern Time

Research on the socio-cultural history of individual countries and regions of the 16th-20th centuries, mutual ideas and interaction between the eastern and western parts of the European continent.

UNIQUE RESEARCH PROGRAMS

Each student can also join a unique research program that offers a specific topic of research and academic competencies, such as special research methods, foreign language learning and more. Some programs provide grants to cover tuition costs.

ADDITIONAL COMPETENCES

A unique opportunity to acquire additional skills that will enhance professional development.

Religious culture

Implemented by the Kyiv Christianity and the Uniate Tradition academic program(http://kyiv-christ.ucu.edu.ua/) and focuses on training specialists in religious culture. Includes free choice courses anthropology of Christian thought and religious culture, special courses, academic conferences and methodological seminars.

Ukraine in the Age of Totalitarianism

Implemented by the educational research program Ukraine of the Age of Totalitarianism and focuses on the study of the totalitarian past of Ukraine in the XX century. The curriculum is presented at the level of special courses and scientific and methodological seminars. The program is a permanent co-organizer of conferences and seminars and offers two research grants on military history and cultural heritage of the Soviet era.

Jewish studies

Implemented by the Jewish Studies Program, which includes a set of thematic and language courses, seminars, books translation and research aimed at preserving and studying the heritage of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, including Galicia.

Women’s studies

Implemented by the Women’s Studies Center, focuses on research and promotion of women’s studies in social, economic, historical and theological aspects. Includes special courses, open lectures and scientific and methodological seminars. The program offers one research grant.

Iberian studies

Implemented by the Iberian Studies Program at UCU and focuses on the study of socio-cultural history of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, political and cultural relations between Spain and the peoples of Eastern Europe. Includes special courses and seminars.

Economic History Studies

Implemented by the Economic History Studies program and focuses on the study of resources, economic development and inequality in the historical perspective. Includes special courses and seminars.

Softskills are creative thinking, project management and career development. They are implemented within the framework of the master’s seminar and university public events.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum of the educational program is structured in such a way that all classes are held in the 1st and 2nd semesters; in the 3d semester students will be able to spend more time to practical training and completion of writing a master’s thesis (project).

Regulatory (compulsory) disciplines offer important competencies for modern researcher in history and cultural heritage: current problems of European history, introduction to public history, methodology of history, textual analysis, theories of cultural heritage, theories of knowledge about the past.

For the 2020-2021 academic year are already planned courses: “Heritage Reuse in Post-Industrial Urban Setting: From Burden to Resource”, “Online Public Engagement for Public History”, “Museum studies” , “History and collective memory”, “Historic tourism”.

WHAT IS POSSIBLE CAREER FOR A GRADUATE?

Graduates of the program can continue their postgraduate studies in Ukraine and abroad or apply their professional skills in the following areas:

  • institutions of public history;
  • museums and galleries;
  • tourist industry;
  • cultural heritage protection and promotion institutions;
  • non-governmental and international projects and institutions in the field of culture and education;
  • archives and libraries;
  • local government bodies and central authorities;
  • media (public intellectual activity and journalism)

TUITION FEES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS

The total cost of studying at educational programs at UCU is an average $3,500. per year in UAH equivalent. Thanks to the support of UCU benefactors, for those enrolling inmaster’s program in history in 2020 the tuition fees is 30,000 UAH. for the full course (three semesters).

Students have an opportunity to receive scholarships, discounts and social discounts from the university, or sign an agreement to pay the tuition on credit.

Also, three research grants covering up to 90% of the cost of the program will be awarded on a competitive basis at the beginning of this academic year: 2 grants fromUkraine in the Age of Totalitarianism program, 1 grant from the Women’s Studies Center.

Also, this year there is a unique opportunity to receive on a competitive basis a grant from O. Goncharenko, given to study the history of the South of modern Ukraine, its socio-cultural and economic development and place in the Europeans’ mental cartography.
