Historian who rethought Ukrainian history
- Неділя, 3 Листопада, 2019
- 17:00 - 19:00
Lecture by Yaroslav Hrytsak «Historian who rethought Ukrainian history: Ivan L. Rudnytsky (1919-1984) and his legacy» is an opening event of the workshop «How to Teach Multiethnic and Transnational History: Ukraine».
There is hardly any other historian who has made such a deep impact on rewriting Ukrainian history as Ivan L. Rudnytsky (1919-1984). His biography is composed of a number of paradoxes. He was born into a mixed Ukrainian-Jewish family, but rarely dealt with the Holocaust, Holodomor, or other related histories of extreme mass violence. He survived the Second World War but was never exposed to any existential dangers. He did not have a successful academic career even after he moved to North America. And, finally, he never wrote a book, preferring instead the genre of historical essays. In this talk Yaroslav Hrytsak is going to address each of these paradoxes as a way of presenting the international global biography of this extraordinary man.
When: 3.11.2019, 17:00-19:00.
Where: Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv. Kozelnytska 2a, room 424.
